NIST Experimental Stone Wall Repair

•• Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland

This historical project involved evaluating the structural soundness of the stone and adequately repairing it to restore the structure to its original, pre-damaged state. The stone wall is comprised of various American masonry stones that originally were on display at the Smithsonian Institution in the 1880’s. Eventually, NIST began using the wall as an experiment to study the weathering on the masonry stone used in commercial and governmental buildings.
